Today, Tyler graduated from Rad Kids. Our school offers this really great program to all of our students at no cost. It is a self-defense type of class but really offers so much more. It is educating kids and empowering them to protect themselves from all sorts of things. The officer that comes out to help with the simulation gives some startling statistics. I had heard it all before as Lauren graduated from the program the first year it was offered at our school. I was again startled today when he mentioned that 96% of our abused children are being abused by someone they know! I don't want to get all paranoid, but I don't want to put my children in dangerous situations either. Anyway, that's not really what I wanted to get into. Tyler had a great time and mostly enjoyed beating up the man in the big red suit.Waiting for his turn to practice.
Practicing his kicking
Tyler and his teacher, Mr. Crandall. The final simulation. Here they run to the woman in red who tells the kids that she is there to pick them up from school, their parents can't come. The kids ask her for a family password. When she doesn't give them the right one, they are supposed to run away. Then they go to the dummy and practice their hammer hits to the head. Then they run to the middle where they meet up with Officer Larsen (or as he is more affectionately known as, the man in the big red suit) and he tries to grab them and drag them away. Then when they get away they run for help and practice dialing 911.
High fiving all the instructors.

So you know how prone I am to paranoia, and this post leaves me a little disturbed. 96%, yes, that's upsetting, but I think what I'm bothered most by is the video clip of the final simulation. Tyler did a great job of course but, seeing him flee from villain to villain to villain is very upsetting. Too many scary people in the world! Do you think LaRue and Matilda would resent me making them wear kid leashes at ages twelve and fourteen?
Yes Lisa, I believe they would!
Just enroll them in a martial arts defense class!
Love ya!
Mom :o)
Michelle, that's an awesome program! I had heard that before that most abused victims were from family, relatives or friends they knew.
Love ya!

On Tyler running, good job, next time a good swift kick in the groin works real well!

What I great program! I didn't even know there was anything like this out there!
It looks like Tyler had a fun time, and learned a lot! Congratulations to him for graduating from the class!
