Awards Assembly

Thursday was the awards assembly for the kids. This year was hard for Tyler as he missed (for the first time since Kindergarten) getting perfect attendance. He got sick this year with Strep Throat and missed two days of school. He usually gets a reading award called the "Hall of Fame" but missed that one this year too because he read the Harry Potter series and two other long series that didn't qualify for the reading contest. I'm a little sad because now he won't get the award for completing the program every year, K-6, but I am so happy that he now enjoys reading and can tackle those big books. A year ago he hated anything over 100 pages. We are also really proud of Tyler for getting straight "A"s. He worked really hard to bring up a couple of B's at the end.

Lauren completed the Hall of Fame and received a certificate for that. She also received another award, Certificate for Outstanding Performance on the Iowa Tests in the areas of Reading, Social Studies and Total Composite. She ranked in the top ten percent nationally. We are very proud of her. She too had straight "A"s and only missed 1 day of school.

McKenna was our little reader this year. She really loved turning in the Hall of Fame sheets and liked helping pick out the right kind of books that would qualify. The Hall of Fame program only requires that you turn in 1 of those sheets which has about 30 books on it in different genres. She turned in 9 this year! She was the top reader for her grade and turned in more than anyone else in the Kindergarten-Second grade category. McKenna also got great grades, all "O"s which are the equivilants of A's in Kindergarten.

We are really proud of the kids and their efforts this year.

Side Note: The Hall of Fame Reading Program is a sheet that has about 30 different books. You can choose the books but they have to be in different categories like Caldecott, Newberry, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animal, Poetry, Beehive Winner, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Science Fiction, Biography, etc. and then some can be free choice. The older kids have to read books over so a certain number of pages to qualify. They break it up into groups, K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and each has it's own set of rules.
