Snow Camping

Last weekend Tyler had his first experience with camping in the snow. However, I didn't actually know that they were going to camp in the snow. The last camp he went on was during the fall and they only needed a tin foil dinner and a sleeping bag. So I didn't actually read the list of things to pack until the afternoon before he left. We had woken up that morning to 6 fresh inches of snow and I kept thinking that they were going to cancel the campout. However, when nobody called and I finally got around to reading the list of things to bring, I realized they were "planning" on camping in the snow. Yikes! We had some work to do. Namely, finding a sleeping bag that would keep him warm. The ones we have aren't very warm and we knew he needed a real one. He also needed a few things like hand/toe warmers, gloves, some pants, snacks and stuff for dinner. After a whirlwind afternoon of shopping and packing we got him off. He was so excited. Unfortunately, when Chris went to drop him off, they had decided that they had better stay and camp in the leaders backyard. I guess the canyon where they were headed already had a bunch of snow and the fresh snow would make things more difficult than they had planned for. Tyler was pretty disappointed but they still had fun. He and a few other boys were brave and since they had the sub-zero sleeping bags decided to sleep outside, on the ground without a tent! He said except for his face, he was toasty warm.
