Hoping to Reap what we Sow

Saturday was another really busy, but productive day. We were up early and working outside. We got our garden in and weeded some of the flower beds. I didn't do anything remotely close to gardening last year and the yard is so overgrown. I decided to tackle some of the beds and it is amazing how much better things look. We tore out one bed and put in some new blocks so we could plant strawberries in a sunny spot. Then I weeded and dug out around our hibiscus tree/bush and another unidentified tree/bush. Lauren helped me weed and unfortunately found an ant hill which seemed to like her. She has quite a few bites now. We cleaned out Gus' forest (our little gnome) and Tyler tackled the new peach trees and mowed the neighbors lawns. Chris worked on the garden, fixed the swamp cooler and mowed our lawns. After we cleaned up we had a nice relaxing BBQ with Lauren's soccer team. There is still tons more to do, but this is a start.

Strawberry Plants

We planted bell peppers, red and yellow onions, habanero and green chili peppers, sweet potatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, peas and tons of tomatoes (like 20+ plants). Now the challenge will be to grow the veggies and not the weeds.

First of all, I'm SO glad Lauren is ok, how scary. When I saw the neck brace, my heart just sank, but I'm glad it was only temporary. Still, such a scare!

Ok, I cannot believe that picture of McKenna asleep on the bed! That absolutely cracked me up!

And I LOVE your garden. I can't believe what hard workers you are - and that's so fun that you are growing green chiles - I wouldn't even know where to start with strawberries, let alone green chiles! Someday I'll have a garden and I'll probably have to get a tutorial from you guys!

Great job! At the end of the day and exhaustion and a few sore muscles, you can look at the rewards of your labors and SMILE!!! :o)
Just a thought on the garden---Assign areas to your kids and have them sort of take ownership and it will be 'their patch' (according to their skill levels) to nuturre and have them see their harvest and rewards. They can keep their weeds out. Sort of their own mini gaden spots! :o) Also keeps them busy for summer! :o)Then it will be a 'family' garden with everyone doing 'their part.'

Great looking yard. I love vegetable gardens. (And flower gardens). We have planted Habanero, Anaheim, and Jalapeno every year for a while and they are soooo good. We planted tomatillos this year and I've heard they grow well here. Good luck with the garden and your yard looks great!
