Say What?

Lauren injured her finger the other day and we thought it might be broken so I took her to the Dr. to find out for sure. After of course we debated about it for two days. I have a serious case of analysis paralysis that is only slightly worse than Chris'. Together we're a train wreck. Anyway, since we were there I had the Dr. check out this cough she has had for over a week. No other symptoms, just a cough. Turns out the finger is badly sprained and the cough is viral. He taped up the finger, wrote her a RX and we were on our way.

When Chris picked up the RX and the pharmacist asked how old the patient was. He told her she was 9. Then they mentioned that they were curious as to why the Dr. would have prescribed this particular RX when it wasn't recommended for children under 10. (I wasn't particularly concerned by this as most medicines are dispensed by weight rather than age and she is 9 1/2 and on the tall side.) Anyway, they asked Chris if she was able to swallow pills ok or had any trouble. He told them she was fine and actually takes pride in showing her brother up by swallowing enormous pills. (These pills are pretty small). They then explained to Chris that it is imperative that she swallow them quickly and that if these pills are sucked on or broken before being completely swallowed they cause the paralysis of the throat making you unable to breathe and therefore you could die! So be careful, and if it does happen get her to the ER ASAP. WHAT???!!!! Are you kidding me? You want me to give these to my 9 year old?! Well, ONLY, because Lauren can swallow pills really well, we did give her 2 doses. However, we are afraid to give her anymore. I think we'll take our chances with the cough.

Umm, I would have called the doctor and asked him or her if they were aware of what they prescribed for Lauren's age and seriously questioed his or her motive in that particular RX. Is the Dr. aware of the 'age' appropriate medication? Hmmm. I would suggest a priesthood blessing! I totally agree about suspending the RX! :o)

Honestly, it makes you really think twice doesn't it? Glad her finger is looking so much better :) I've missed walking because Kurt and I take Caden hiking every morning and I wouldn't want to over-exercise for goodness sakes. LOL
